Five Times Carrie Bradshaw was an Asshole

Five Times Carrie Bradshaw was an Asshole

Sex and the City was a big part of my youth (well, late teens and twenties). Midway through the journey though I realized I was more so there for the other characters then I was for our main girl Carrie. Don’t get wrong, I never hated her per se but I certainly didn’t adore her the way her friends – and most men – seemed to. In fact, I often found it more of a mystery that these women would want to be around her at all sometimes let alone rate her so highly (Brady’s godmother… seriously?). I credit SJP for making Carrie so likeable because to be straight – she could be kind of an asshole sometimes.

Now before I’m attacked by all Carrie die hards, just let me give a few examples of what has led me to this conclusion. My list of top five Carrie moments if you will – where she either had you rolling your eyes or was actually a down and out asshole…

  1. The Bullshit Bagels – so Miranda’s lying on her floor with a back injury and calls Carrie to pick her up. Instead of rushing to the aid of her friend she instead sends her boyfriend over to a mortified and very naked Miranda. She then has the audacity to call over the next day to whine about how said boyfriend won’t forgive her (for cheating!) under the pretence that she’s being a good friend by checking in with bagels. She didn’t even bring cream cheese!

2. The Wild Horse Analogy – this one is more of an eye roll than it is arsey but I had to add it regardless. Yes Carrie, the reason Big is marrying the younger, hotter, twenty something model after leaving you in the dust for Paris is because you’re too wild for him to tame. I mean come on, this is like those moments in your younger years where you try to convince yourself that your crush is scoring someone else because he’s afraid of his feelings for you. In short, no. Sometimes they really are just not that into you. I know Carrie eventually got the guy but at this earlier stage in the show, it always came across that while he liked her, he didn’t like her enough. Not as much as she loved him and that was the main issue with their relationship. While there were very raw and relatable moments in their story – this little spectacle was not one of them. Watching her tussle his hair before sauntering off (in slow motion to stare at a horse might I add) is one of the most ridiculous scenes I ever witnessed on the show. His confused/WTF face is what I imagine any ex would look like were we to try “do a Carrie” in real life.

3. The “apology” to Natasha – though the affair in general was awful, there were parts of it where I could at least see how Carrie had ended up in such a mess. For me personally, it was her behavior after it had all come out and both respective relationships had ended that really grinded my gears. I get feeling guilty for ruining poor Natasha’s marriage (and tooth) but in classic Carrie style she still manages to make the apology All! About! Her!. She basically stalks her love rival, demanding forgiveness in what’s supposed to come off as humorous scenes (really it’s just obnoxious and insensitive though). It also doesn’t help that she’s not interested in Natasha’s feelings at all. Nope, Carrie just wants to save her own karma after being mugged and feels Natasha forgiving her is the only way to waive her guilt away and clear her conscience once and for all. To add a nitpick, she drinks Natasha’s glass of water at the restaurant where she so rudely ambushes her and ruins her lunch date….. because she’s stressed out by the situation. Ugh.

4. Inviting Big to Aidan’s cabin – Seriously. I don’t think Aidan helped with a lot of the issues in their second attempt at a relationship (he should have just run for the hills) but Carrie’s lack of boundaries when it came to her ex beau, as well as respect for her current man’s feelings were at an all time low here. Yes it all ended up being fine after a mud fight but really, he should have just kicked her to the curb there and then. Also, the fact that Big not only showed up but also asked to stay over kind of put him in line with Carrie when it comes to self awareness #soulmates

5. Making Charlotte give her a down payment for an apartment because she’d blown 40,000 on shoes – for me, this is the worst one. It’s over a decade later and I’m still fuming. Carrie needs to buy her apartment but suddenly realizes she’s blown all her money on shoes and has no savings. She’s outraged that the bank won’t lend her money despite the lack of savings and yet, it’s somehow Charlotte’s fault because she didn’t offer to lend her the money in the first place. Don’t even get me started on the fact that the other two mugs were willing to offer it to their flaky friend without so much of a pause. The whole thing was ridiculous and Carrie acted like a spoiled and entitled brat. I have a lovely group of close friends but I’m sure if I demanded one of them to provide me with a housing deposit I’d be swiftly told where to go. In the end it all works out though because Charlotte sees the error of her ways and gives Carrie her engagement ring to sell. Carrie then promises to pay her back and it’s all happy ever after. Does anyone actually think she ever paid her back?

Ultimately I think my main issue with Carrie is that it’s all about her. Well, of course it is, she’s the central character. But for a show that was so brilliantly based on female friendship, I often felt she was the over-hyped friend. Not a bad friend per se but definitely not the best one of the bunch. I think she’s that person we’ve all had in our lives at some stage – when she calls over it’s her problems, her love-life, her dilemma’s while you listen and nod sympathetically but if you ever have an issue you try to confide in her about? Well she’ll just give you a quick response before going back to yapping about herself. I’m not saying she’s awful. She’s had loads of great moments on the show and as a central character she was perfect. I’m just saying that maybe she’s not someone I’d immediately run to if my life were in jeopardy and certainly not someone I’d consider lending money too.

Can you think of anymore shut up Carrie moments? I’m sure I’ve left some out. Feel free to throw a few more suggestions into the comment section.

  • This is so funny, but also I can really relate! I just rewatched Sex and the City, and realized that Carrie categorically is an asshole. Especially when she moves to Paris with Aleksandr. It’s not so much that it’s morally wrong, more that it’s an annoying plot point for the audience

  • Totally agree with all the above, and to branch out to the films, Sex and the City 2, the whole asking the girls for advice, ignoring it and going for dinner with Aidan, the kiss, demanding that the girls all drop everything to dissect said kiss, ignoring their advice…..all done in true Carrie ‘it’s all about me’ style!!
